Australian retail sales dipped 0.1
percent in June while sales for the whole second quarter rose
only modestly, another sign of the consumer caution that is
leaning against a near-term hike in interest rates.

The Nikkei average hit a five-week
trough on Wednesday as more disappointing U.S. data fuelled
concerns about the health of the global economy, while players
said caution about yen intervention would not necessarily offer
that much support.

Suzuki Motor Corp posted a
20 percent drop in quarterly operating profit on Wednesday after
the March 11 earthquake hampered production, and stuck to its
annual guidance for a small profit rise driven by the Indian
market.
